In a historic move celebrating ‘Unity in Diversity’, the Holy See’s global communications network now speaks the language of the archipelago, unlocking new pathways for faith, peace, and cultural exchange.

ROME, ITALY-Veritas Indonesia. Bridging the heart of the Catholic Church with the world’s most populous Muslim majority nation, Bahasa Indonesia has officially made its historic debut as the 57th language of Vatican News.
In a landmark agreement between Indonesia and the Holy See, the Indonesian national language has been seamlessly integrated into the Vatican’s global communications portal. This significant milestone was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia to the Holy See in Rome on March 25, 2026, coinciding with the Feast of the Annunciation.
The launch is the proud culmination of years of diplomatic and grassroots cooperation. The Indonesian Catholic Journalists Association (PWKI) has actively championed this integration since 2022. With the steadfast support of former Indonesian Ambassador to the Holy See, Amrih Jinangkung, the proposal was successfully advanced to the Dicastery for Communication. The initiative also rides on the profound momentum generated by Pope Francis’s apostolic visit to Indonesia in September 2024, the upcoming 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the Holy See in 2025, and the spirit of the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope.
Key delegates gathered to witness the historic signing, including Indonesia’s Ambassador to the Holy See, Michael Trias Kuncahyono; Bishop Agustinus Budi Utomo, President of the Commission for Social Communications of the Indonesian Bishops’ Conference (KWI); and PWKI representatives AM Putut Prabantoro, Mayong Suryolaksono, Ovier, and Jumartana. Paolo Ruffini, Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, represented the Vatican.
During the event, Ruffini expressed profound optimism, stating that the new channel would not only deepen bilateral ties but also serve as a vital platform for global cultural exchange, introducing Indonesian heritage to audiences worldwide.
Bishop Agustinus warmly welcomed the launch, noting that the Pope’s messages, universal Church teachings, and global news are now directly accessible to the estimated 252 to 300 million Bahasa Indonesia speakers globally. He hopes the platform will amplify the unique issues and concerns of the Indonesian Church while promoting its foundational philosophy of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity).
“Language connects and informs nations,” Bishop Agustinus remarked. He envisioned the channel’s content heavily featuring universal values such as peace, justice, interreligious dialogue, and compelling human stories.
“Our greatest challenge is not just to teach the Indonesian language but to make sure it stays alive: active, relevant, and meaningful,” the prelate added. “Church media should serve as the ‘face and voice’ that disseminates truth and peace in a world often filled with divisive information.”
To ensure the channel operates seamlessly, KWI and its partners are currently recruiting dedicated editors, translators, and technical staff.
This development holds special significance in Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago of 17,500 islands and over 281 million people. While renowned as the world’s most populous Muslim majority country, it is also home to a vibrant Catholic minority of approximately 8.5 million people (3.1% of the population), who can now engage with the universal Church more closely than ever in their mother tongue.
