Decades after standing as the moral conscience of a war-torn nation, the repatriated remains of Timor-Leste’s most revered bishops have finally returned home to a profound national embrace.
DILI-Veritas Indonesia. The mortal remains of three venerated prelates—Bishop Jaime Garcia Goulart, Bishop José Joaquim Ribeiro, and Bishop Martinho da Costa Lopes—arrived in Timor-Leste on Tuesday afternoon aboard an Aero Dili flight, marking a deeply emotional milestone for the deeply Catholic nation.
At Nicolau Lobato International Airport, the urns carrying the historical figures were received with full military honors by the Falintil-FDTL. A solemn procession then moved to the VIP lounge, where representatives of the Government and the Church signed an official handover document.
Cardinal Virgílio do Carmo da Silva, representing the Timor-Leste Episcopal Conference, expressed profound gratitude for the government’s cooperation in the complex repatriation effort. He noted that the return of these shepherds, who led their flocks through periods of intense upheaval, transcended mere ceremonial duty.
“During the darkest moments of our history and struggle, they became the voice of the voiceless,” Cardinal Virgílio stated. “They stood firmly beside those who suffered amid the hardships and violence of war. They became pillars of hope and defenders of human dignity and the right of this land to self-determination.”
Following the airport ceremonies, the historic homecoming culminated in a solemn Mass at a specially prepared site in Tasi-Tolu. There, the three newly repatriated prelates were honored alongside a fourth monumental figure in the nation’s history, the late Bishop Alberto Ricardo da Silva.
Presiding over the Eucharistic celebration, Bishop Norberto do Amaral reminded the gathered faithful that these men were not strangers, but fathers finally returning to their own homeland.
“For many years, they had been away from Timor. Some left because of age and retirement, while others were separated from the country because of its political situation,” Bishop Norberto reflected. “Today, they return to Timor not physically, but spiritually, as their mortal remains, preserved in ashes, are brought back among us.”
During his homily, Bishop Norberto recounted the extraordinary legacies of the four leaders. He recalled how Bishop Goulart, the first bishop after Timor separated from the Diocese of Macau, returned from wartime refuge in Australia to find Dili—and its newly inaugurated Cathedral—bombed into ruins by the Japanese. Despite the devastation, he tirelessly rebuilt the diocese and established crucial formation programs.
His successors continued this fierce dedication to the Timorese people. Bishop Ribeiro and Monsignor Lopes were instrumental in expanding educational and pastoral reach, including the establishment of the Colégio Infantes Sagres in Maliana. Later, Bishop Alberto Ricardo da Silva assumed leadership during the fraught Indonesian occupation, famously enduring repeated police interrogations after providing sanctuary during the tragic Santa Cruz massacre in 1991.
Standing before the remains of the four bishops, Bishop Norberto asked for their heavenly intercession for the world and for the people of Timor-Leste, whom they had served with unwavering devotion.
The sprawling Mass was attended by Cardinal Virgílio, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Holy See in Timor-Leste, state and government authorities, former national leaders, and thousands of faithful citizens.
The public will continue to have the opportunity to pay tribute, pray, and celebrate Mass at Tasi-Tolu until the prelates’ remains are brought to their final resting place at Dili Cathedral. As Cardinal Virgílio noted, “Their names are written in our history, their memory continues to live in our hearts, and the legacy they have left will remain with the generations of today and tomorrow.”
